Many publications are available in Open Access.Forty years ago, on 14 June 1985, five European countries - France, Germany, Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg – signed the Schengen Agreement, laying the foundation for gradual abolition of checks at their common borders.
Over time, Schengen area expanded, and is currently covering 25 EU member states (Ireland and Cyprus are not part of Schengen) and four non-EU countries (Iceland, Lichtenstein, Norway and Switzerland).
Removal of internal border checks facilitates cross-border mobility promoting four freedoms (free movement of persons, capital, goods, and services). The Schengen area brings significant economic benefits to all citizens and businesses in its participating states. Establishing Schengen area has also lead to increased cooperation between the police forces, customs authorities and external border control authorities of all the member states.
This library guide aims to bring together relevant information sources (e-books, articles, policy papers, official publications, documents, legislation and podcasts) on the subject.
