This timely book astutely charts the transformative effect of the war in Ukraine on the EU, from both a legal and policy perspective. Departing from the usual broad sweep of deepening and widening, this book focuses on the constitutional and substantive impact on the EU of the recent war in Ukraine.

Russia's illegal aggression against Ukraine has been a watershed moment for the European Union (EU). The return of large-scale conventional warfare to the European continent, unseen since the Second World War, shattered the illusion of perpetual peace and forced the EU to confront the reality of hard power. Originally created to maintain internal peace, the EU was never conceived to handle the challenges of war. Yet, the war in Ukraine required the EU to repurpose its machinery of government to do just that. Embracing a comparative analytical framework, this book examines how the EU constitution has functioned in response to Russia's aggression.

This open access book aims at discussing the manifold consequences that the war against Ukraine bears for the European Union and EU Studies. It takes stock of the fact that the Russian attack on Ukraine and the ensuing War not only affects the global order, but also has challenged a number of established narratives and convictions for the European Union and its member states. The EU now needs to position itself in the changing world order. Concretely it needs to deal with a number of membership applications, internal and external challenges to liberal democracy, and the development of its strategic autonomy in a number of decisive policy fields. The book convenes experienced scholars, with chapters covering various themes and fields.

This interdisciplinary book takes stock of Ukraine's thorny European integration path in the last two decades. Europa wird in diesem Band nicht als geografischer oder historischer Begriff, sondern als normatives Konzept verstanden, das die Achtung der Menschen- und Bürgerrechte, Rechtsstaatlichkeit, Gewaltenteilung, parlamentarische Demokratie, Meinungs- und Pressefreiheit usw. umfasst. Es werden die Bemühungen der Ukraine, sich in der Ära Juschtschenko der Europäischen Union anzunähern, analysiert und bewertet, aber auch die aus früherer Zeit ererbten kulturellen Konstanten untersucht, die sich mehrheitlich negativ auf diese Bestrebungen auswirkten. In mehreren Beiträgen wird zudem gezeigt, wie sich die Europa-Orientierung der Ukraine unter Präsident Janukowitsch seit März 2010 verändert hat.

This open access book discusses conditions of conflict resolution over the Russo-Ukrainian War and analyzes requirements for long-term durable peace for Ukraine. What are the impacts of the Russo-Ukrainian War? Do we really know them? This open access book provides a comprehensive analysis of the Maidan massacre in Ukraine. It uses a theoretical framework of rational choice, moral hazard, state- repression backfire, and Weberian ideas about rational action to explore the massacre. The book draws on publicly available videos, photos and audio recordings of the massacre in English, Ukrainian, Russian, Polish and other languages, along with several hundred individual testimonies and revelations from the Ukrainian investigation and a trial and its verdict. By examining which parties were responsible for the massacre, the book analyses its implications for not only Russia's war on Ukraine but also political developments across the globe.
