World Book Day 2024 - an introduction to Belgian literature

23 April is World Book Day (also known as International Day of the Book). An initiative of UNESCO, the date was chosen to commemorate the anniversary of the deaths of Miguel de Cervantes and William Shakespeare.

This year, the Council Library (COMM) and the Staff Library (Staff Committee) have joined forces to celebrate World Book Day together, choosing Belgian literature as the theme.  Belgium has a rich and varied literature. For many of us books can be the perfect gateway to better understand history, culture and identities. What is not to embrace?

The libraries have created a guide of Belgian literatureWhether you are dipping your toe into the Belgian literary pool for the first time, or you are a well-read Belgian bibliophile, there should be something for everyone in this list. Books written in Dutch, French and German have all been selected, covering the three official languages in Belgium.

The guide also indicates whether the books are available in the Staff Library in other languages, such as English. The descriptions are written in English or French, as they are the most commonly used two working languages of the EU.

Please note:

This bibliography is not exhaustive; it provides a selection of resources made by the Council Library. All titles are hyperlinked to Eureka, the resource discovery service of the Council Library, where you can find additional materials on the subject.

The contents are the sole responsibility of their authors. Resources linked from this bibliography do not necessarily represent the positions, policies, or opinions of the Council of the European Union or the European Council. Some resources link outside of the @consilium.europa.eu domain.

Reuse of the covers is prohibited, they belong to the respective copyrightholders.

The Library guides contain a selection of relevant resources from the online Eureka catalogue of the Council Libraries. They also contain titles beyond our collections, including open-access publications and websites. The Library guides do not necessarily represent the positions, policies or opinions of the Council of the European Union or the European Council.
