The opportunity to create a socially-based feedback system feels even more urgent during the COVID-19 crisis since many people are working remotely and without the same level of daily interactions with managers. A social feedback system provides the employee a larger amount of feedback from peers and others. This reduces the emphasis on receiving feedback from the employee’s manager alone.

An audit of bias in performance reviews at a midsized law firm found sobering differences by both race and gender. The authors identified four patterns of bias in the evaluations and recommended two simple changes: 1) Reworking the performance evaluation form to break job categories down into competencies and require that ratings be backed by at least three pieces of evidence; and 2) Developing a workshop in which participants were introduced to the patterns of bias and learned how to use the new form.

Annual work evaluations can be delicate situations ; the article introduces a helpful chart that might serve to facilitate conversations and spark reflection.

Performance Dialogue, also known as PD for short, is a documented and time sensitive conversation between the supervisor and the employee that ensures organizational effectiveness and staff engagement. The conversation provides an opportunity to identify work objectives and evolving priorities, explore developmental/training options, recognize successes, and determine areas for improvement.

Companies have continued to use the 360-degree process throughout the years because it works. The purpose of this study was to take an inductive approach in examining the extent to which organizational contexts represent significant sources of variance in supervisor performance ratings, and to explore various factors that may explain contextual rating variability. Results suggest that much of what may often be interpreted as idiosyncratic rater variance, may actually reflect systematic rating variability across contexts.

The study examines whether a supervisor's coaching leadership style predicts the perception of organizational politics in performance appraisal (OPPA) reported by the collaborators. The results found that coaching leaders are perceived as less manipulative in their performance ratings, especially by older employees.

A university introduced the following model : the
new performance management system allows supervisors and staff to establish and comment on performance goals throughout the year and, at the end of the year, provide a rating for each goal. In addition, the system requires staff and supervisors to rate and comment on nine core competencies upon which the University’s leadership determined staff should be evaluated.

This report looks at the capacity and capabilities of civil servants of OECD countries. It explores the skills required to make better policies and regulations, to work effectively with citizens and service users, to commission cost-effective service delivery, and to collaborate with stakeholders in networked settings. This study was conducted to investigate which pitfalls users of personal development plans (PDPs) perceive in business and governmental organisations with mandatory PDP use. Users emphasised the need for the tool to be properly implemented and supported in terms of learning and reflection, instruction and feedback, and having a motivating supervisor.

By encouraging a focused approach to each individual's training/developmental needs, managers can help their employees enhance their job skills and become more effective and productive. Managers who promote the use of IDPs also send a clear message to their charges that they view each person's professional development as a priority.
