Eureka - Library Catalogue: Search

Simple search

Eureka homepage is where you can start any simple search: type your keywords (subject, title, author, whatever you need) in the search bar

By default, Eureka searches all our collections. However, you can toggle the basic search (drop-down menu) to go through the individual collections of the GSC libraries.

You can improve your search using:

  • boolean operators in uppercase if you need them:
    • "AND" to combine and narrow e.g. (agriculture AND sustainability)
    • "OR" to use alternatives and expand the search e.g. (Irish OR Celtic), and
    • "NOT" to exclude concepts.
  • quotes (“”) to search a specific phrase e.g. “EU Law”

Advanced search

The advanced search allows you to make more detailed searches and filter. It will enable you to:

  • Search in specific fields (author, title...)
  • Combine several using boolean operators
  • Filter by scope
  • Filter by material type, language and publication year

Tweak your results

Once you launch a search you will find the results on the left side of the screen and options to manage them on the left side:

  • Expand my results: will also search the external databases that are connected with ours. Note that this search will bring in resources outside our collection to which we don't provide direct access. If you find the material that you wanted to find you can request it via Eureka or via the library's email.
  • Sorted by: you can choose the order in which the results are presented.
  • Filters: They allow you to refine your search by narrowing the results. For example, if you are only interested in those with full text online, in certain languages or dates.
    • The filters you apply will appear at the top, you can remove them by clicking on the X.
    • If you are going to use the same filters during the whole session, click on "remember my filters".

Personalising search results

'Personalise' or configuring the ranking of search results according to your needs. It is particularly helpful for searches where results come from a variety of disciplines or include a large set of articles. It does not replace topic facets or act as a filter. It simply adjusts the ranking of the results to the general discipline of the user.

The Library guides contain a selection of relevant resources from the online Eureka catalogue of the Council Libraries. They also contain titles beyond our collections, including open-access publications and websites. The Library guides do not necessarily represent the positions, policies or opinions of the Council of the European Union or the European Council.
